Fingerprints at home, the FBI application by mail, the apostille in Washington without travel, and the sworn translation in Brazil. ## Quick Answer You can get an **FBI background check from abroad** (also called an FBI criminal record check, police clearance or Identity History Summary) without flying home. Print an **FD-258 fingerprint card**, have your prints taken by the Brazilian Federal Police or a technician, or ink them yourself (**US embassies and consulates do not take fingerprints**). Apply online to the FBI for **$18**, mail the card, and the Identity History Summary arrives **by email as a PDF**, typically 2 to 4 weeks later. Everything the Ministry asked for is exactly as it was written. ### The Federal Police step, after approval Approval is not the last thing that happens. Your residence has to be registered in person with the Polícia Federal before your RNM card exists, and that step is its own process. - **The documents are not the ones you already sent.** The Federal Police ask for their own set, and assembling it correctly from outside the Brazilian system is where most people stall. - **What is required differs by state.** The unit that registers you in São Paulo does not ask for the same things as the one in Florianópolis, and the published guidance does not always match the counter. - **The appointment is the hard part.** Slots at the busy units open without warning and are taken quickly. Camila books yours. ## What You Need, and Who This Page Is For The document is the FBI **Identity History Summary**, the record Brazilian authorities and most foreign governments mean by "FBI background check", "FBI clearance certificate" or "FBI police clearance". Every adult applicant for the [Brazil digital nomad visa](https://getbrazilvisa.com/brazil-digital-nomad-visa) who is a US citizen needs one, apostilled and translated. This page covers the case where you are **already outside the US**, most often already in Brazil. The first three are sequential; the fourth runs in parallel. The step names below are the same ones we use with clients. 1 The FBI check Print the card, take your prints, apply online for $18, mail one envelope. The result arrives by email as a PDF, typically 2 to 4 weeks after mailing. 2 Apostille in Washington Only the US Department of State can apostille a federal document. An agent does it from your emailed PDF: 7 to 21 days. 3 Sworn translation A tradutor juramentado translates the check and its apostille, delivered as a PDF, in a few days. 4 Paper where it needs to be Color scans are enough to file. The physical original is only for your Federal Police appointment, months later. ### Step by step 1. 1. Print the FD-258 card and take your fingerprints Print the FBI's FD-258 fingerprint card (the FD-1164 on plain paper is also accepted). Have your prints taken by the Brazilian Federal Police, another law enforcement agency or a qualified technician, or ink them yourself. US embassies and consulates do not take fingerprints. 2. 2. Apply online to the FBI and pay the $18 fee Request your Identity History Summary through the FBI's electronic departmental order system at edo.cjis.gov and pay the $18 fee by card. The FBI recommends a computer with Firefox rather than a phone. 3. 3. Mail the card to the FBI by tracked courier Send the fingerprint card with your printed confirmation email to the FBI's CJIS Division in West Virginia by a tracked courier. Processing generally takes 10 to 15 days after the FBI receives it. 4. 4. Receive the result by email and check it The Identity History Summary arrives by email as a PDF. Check every field. Its issue date starts the 90-day validity clock. 5. 5. Get the apostille from the US Department of State Only the US Department of State in Washington can apostille a federal document. An apostille agent can file it from your emailed PDF, so you do not travel. It takes 7 to 21 days. 6. 6. Have it sworn-translated in Brazil A tradutor juramentado translates the FBI check and its apostille into Portuguese, usually in a few days, for about BRL 100 to 150. 7. 7. File with color scans, keep the original for the Federal Police Color scans are enough to file the application. The physical original is only needed later, at your Federal Police registration appointment. The online application has a few screens where a small slip delays the whole request, and the envelope has to reach a specific FBI address. [See the guide](#fbi-guide). ## Fingerprints for the FBI Background Check, Taken Abroad US embassies and consulates do not take fingerprints The US Department of State says its embassies and consulates do not provide fingerprinting services. Advice that sends you to the consulate in São Paulo, Rio or Brasília costs you a trip and a week. The FBI accepts prints on the standard **FD-258 fingerprint card**, and also on the **FD-1164** printed on plain paper. Outside the US, your prints can be taken by: - The Brazilian Federal Police (Polícia Federal) - Another local law enforcement agency - A qualified fingerprint technician - You, with an ink pad, at home There is no FBI background check without fingerprints: the Identity History Summary is matched on your prints, not your name. The card has a header with your personal details (the Social Security number is optional) and 14 print blocks. Smudged or over-inked prints are the most common reason a mailed request comes back, which restarts the wait. Taking prints that pass on the first try comes down to a short technique, and the header has fields that are easy to get wrong. Both are covered step by step in the guide. [See the guide](#fbi-guide). ## The Apostille: Only the US Department of State Brazil joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2016, so a US document needs an apostille to be used there. The FBI check is a **federal** document, and only the **US Department of State in Washington, DC** can apostille federal documents. A state Secretary of State apostille on an FBI check is the wrong office, and Brazilian authorities do not accept it. The agent files the DS-4194 request with the State Department and pays the $20 fee. Turnaround is **7 to 21 days**. Agent fees commonly run **$100 to $250**. No travel, no US address. By mail yourself Usually **5 weeks or more**, and it needs a US return address. With a 90-day validity clock running, we do not recommend it from abroad. Searching for "FBI background check apostille expedite" mostly turns up agents promising speed. The State Department sets the pace, so what separates agents is whether they accept your PDF without a mailed original, how they handle the result, and whether they commit to a turnaround in writing. [See the guide](#fbi-guide). ## Sworn Translation in Brazil The FBI check and its apostille are translated into Portuguese by a **tradutor juramentado**, a sworn translator registered with a Brazilian commercial board. Expect **BRL 100 to 150** and a few days, delivered as a PDF. Proofread names, dates and document numbers against the original before you file: a typo in a sworn translation means a corrected translation. You file with **color scans**.
