# Do You Need to Speak Portuguese for Brazil's Digital Nomad Visa?

No, you do not need to speak Portuguese to qualify for Brazil's VITEM XIV digital nomad visa. There is no language test, and your foreign documents are accepted in their original language as long as each carries a sworn Portuguese translation (tradutor juramentado). The one real hurdle is that the MigranteWeb application portal is entirely in Portuguese, but a lawyer or a translated walkthrough removes that. Where Portuguese genuinely helps is after you arrive: the Federal Police appointment, opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, and getting your CPF all go more smoothly with some basic Portuguese, even though none of them legally require fluency.

## The myth vs the reality

The visa rules under Normative Resolution CNIg 45/2021 set no language requirement. What trips people up is not speaking Portuguese, it is the paperwork being in Portuguese: the MigranteWeb portal, the GRU payment slips, and the requirement that every foreign document be accompanied by a **sworn** Portuguese translation (a regular translation is not accepted).

## Where Portuguese actually helps (after arrival)

-   Federal Police / CRNM appointment — staff rarely speak English.
-   Opening a Brazilian bank account and getting your CPF.
-   Signing a rental contract and dealing with landlords.
-   Day-to-day life outside the main expat neighborhoods.

Bottom line: you can get the visa with zero Portuguese, but a few phrases make life in Brazil far easier.
