# Brazil Digital Nomad Visa Statistics: The DOU Tracker

Every digital nomad residence authorization Brazil publishes in its official gazette, the Diario Oficial da Uniao, counted month by month since the visa launched. No estimates, no viral figures: the primary source, read in full.

## Quick Answer

Brazil has published **2,161 initial digital nomad residence authorizations** and **1,097 renewals** in the Diario Oficial da Uniao between January 2022 and June 2026. In 2026 (through June), new grants are **up 11%** and renewals **up 21%** versus the same period of 2025. **United States** is the leading nationality. Figures cover in-country (MigranteWeb) decisions; consular visas are not published in the DOU.

## This Month in the Diario Oficial

In June 2026, the Ministry of Justice published **49 new digital nomad residence authorizations** and **51 renewals** in the Diario Oficial da Uniao. Every one of these decisions is an in-country application filed through MigranteWeb under [Resolucao Normativa 45/2021](https://www.in.gov.br/en/web/dou/-/resolucao-n-45-de-9-de-setembro-de-2021-344067530), the rule that created the [Brazil digital nomad visa](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa).

Camila's read on the latest data: renewals are the number to watch. 2026 year-to-date renewals are up 21% on 2025, which means a large share of the nomads who arrived a year ago decided Brazil was worth a second year. That is retention, and it is the strongest quiet signal in this dataset that the program is working for the people who use it.

**Why this tracker exists:** Brazil publishes every in-country digital nomad approval in its official gazette, but nobody was counting them. Publicly available figures stop at OBMigra's 444 registrations for 2023, and unsourced numbers circulate to fill the gap. This page replaces guesses with the primary source, updated monthly.

## Monthly Approvals Since 2022

The chart shows the last 18 months of published decisions. The record month for new grants is **May 2022 with 328**. The full monthly series back to January 2022 is in the table below and in the downloadable CSV.

## 2025 vs 2026: Is the Program Growing?

Comparing January through June of both years, new authorizations went from **250** in 2025 to **278** in 2026 (+11%), and renewals from **174** to **211** (+21%).

| Period | 2025 | 2026 | Change |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| New authorizations (Jan to Jun) | 250 | 278 | +11% |
| Renewals (Jan to Jun) | 174 | 211 | +21% |
| Total (Jan to Jun) | 424 | 489 | +15% |

**About the "3,800 digital nomads" figure circulating online:** no official source publishes it. The verifiable official counts are OBMigra's 171 registrations (2022) and 444 (2023), plus everything on this page, which comes directly from the DOU. If a statistic does not cite the DOU, SISMIGRA, or OBMigra, ask where it came from.

Remember the scope: these are in-country MigranteWeb decisions. Nomads who obtained their VITEM XIV at [a Brazilian consulate abroad](/find-brazilian-consulate) enter Brazil with the visa already in their passport, and those issuances are not published in the DOU. Real total volume is higher than this tracker shows.

## Approvals by Nationality

Each despacho entry lists the applicant's country, which makes this the only nationality breakdown of Brazil's digital nomad program built from the primary source. Use the explorer to switch between countries and world regions and to step through each year of the program. A small share of older entries omit the country field and are excluded from this breakdown.

United States applicants should note the eVisa rule: since April 2025, US, Canadian, and Australian citizens also need a [Brazilian eVisa for entry](/brazil-evisa-vs-digital-nomad-visa-for-us-citizens), which is separate from (and does not replace) the digital nomad visa.

## Who Applies: Age at Approval

Each published entry includes the applicant's date of birth, so the tracker can answer a question no survey can: how old is the typical approved digital nomad in Brazil? The median age at approval is **36**, across 2,123 initial grants.

This matches what Camila sees in her own caseload: established remote professionals in their late twenties to early forties, earning well above the [$1,500 per month minimum](/requirements-digital-nomad-visa-brazil), often applying as [couples](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-couples).

## The Renewal Signal: Nomads Are Staying

The digital nomad authorization is valid for one year and renewable for a second. Renewals therefore measure something arrivals cannot: how many people liked the first year enough to file Brazilian paperwork a second time. Since tracking began, the DOU shows **1,097 renewals against 2,161 initial grants**.

A renewal application has its own document set and its own timing traps, particularly proving ongoing foreign income for the second year. The [renewal guide](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-renewal) covers the process, and applicants planning beyond year two should read the [permanent residency pathways guide](/brazil-permanent-residency-path).

## Approved? Your 30-Day Clock Already Started

Here is the detail that catches applicants every month: when your MigranteWeb application is approved, your **30-day deadline to register with the Federal Police starts on the date your approval is published in the DOU**, not when you receive an email and not when you happen to check MigranteWeb. Camila has seen applicants discover their approval weeks late and lose most of their registration window.

To check for your own name: open [in.gov.br's DOU search](https://www.in.gov.br/leiturajornal), enter your full name in quotation marks, and restrict results to Secao 1. Approvals appear as despachos from the Ministry of Justice's Department of Migrations. Once you find your entry, follow the [Federal Police registration guide](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-rnm-federal-police) immediately.

**What a real entry looks like:** "Processo: 08228.0XXXXX/2026-XX Requerente: YOUR NAME Prazo: 1 Ano Imigrante: YOUR NAME Data Nascimento: ... Passaporte: ... Pais: YOUR COUNTRY." If the DOU misspells your name or passport number, the record needs a formal rectification before the Federal Police will register you, which is exactly the kind of problem a [lawyer-led application](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-lawyer) catches early.

## Methodology

Every data point on this page comes from Section 1 of the Diario Oficial da Uniao. Residence authorizations decided through MigranteWeb are published as batch despachos by the General Coordination of Labor Immigration (CGIL) at the Ministry of Justice. Each despacho groups decisions under a heading naming the legal basis; digital nomad decisions appear under "Residencia - RESOLUCAO 45/2021" (new grants) and "Residencia - RESOLUCAO 45/2021 - Renovacao de Residencia" (renewals).

- Every DOU Section 1 edition since January 2022 is searched for despachos citing Resolucao Normativa 45/2021.
- Each matching despacho is read in full and each "Processo:" entry under an RN 45/2021 heading is counted once.
- Entries are classified as new grants or renewals by their heading, and the country and year of birth printed in each entry feed the nationality and age breakdowns.
- Rectifications (retificacoes) of earlier despachos are excluded to avoid double counting.
- Only aggregates are published. Names and passport numbers, although public in the DOU, are never republished here.

Known limits: the tracker measures published in-country decisions, not consular visas and not physical arrivals. If the Ministry changes its heading wording, a month could briefly undercount until the parser is corrected; every monthly update is reviewed by Camila before publication.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How many digital nomad visas does Brazil approve per month?

Based on every decision published in the Diario Oficial da Uniao, Brazil granted an average of 51 new in-country digital nomad residence authorizations per month over the last 12 months, plus an average of 40 renewals. The strongest month on record is May 2022 with 328 new grants.

### How many digital nomads has Brazil approved in total?

Between January 2022 and June 2026, the Diario Oficial da Uniao published 2,161 initial digital nomad residence authorizations and 1,097 renewals under Resolucao Normativa 45/2021, a combined 3,258 published decisions. This covers in-country (MigranteWeb) applications only.

### Do these numbers include visas issued at Brazilian consulates?

No. Consular VITEM XIV visa issuances are consular acts and are never published in the Diario Oficial da Uniao. This tracker counts residence authorizations decided by the Ministry of Justice through MigranteWeb, the in-country route. Total digital nomad volume including consular visas is therefore higher than these figures.

### Which nationality gets the most Brazil digital nomad visas?

United States leads with 804 published decisions (452 initial grants and 352 renewals) since January 2022. Each DOU despacho lists the applicant's country, which is how this breakdown is compiled.

### Is the claim that Brazil has 3,800 registered digital nomads accurate?

No official source publishes that figure. The official OBMigra counts were 171 registered digital nomads in 2022 and 444 in 2023, and this tracker's primary-source DOU count shows the real scale of in-country approvals since then. Treat any statistic that does not cite the DOU, SISMIGRA, or OBMigra with caution.

### What is a DOU despacho?

A despacho is a published administrative decision. For digital nomad applications filed through MigranteWeb, the General Coordination of Labor Immigration (CGIL) at the Ministry of Justice publishes batch despachos in Section 1 of the Diario Oficial da Uniao listing each approved applicant's process number, name, passport, and country.

### When does the 30-day Federal Police registration deadline start?

The 30-day window to register with the Federal Police and obtain your CRNM card starts on the date your approval is published in the Diario Oficial da Uniao, not on the date you receive an email or check MigranteWeb. Applicants who miss this distinction can lose their registration window.

### How do I find my own name in the Diario Oficial?

Go to in.gov.br, open the search (Consulta DOU), enter your full name in quotation marks, and restrict the search to Secao 1. Approvals appear under the Ministry of Justice's Department of Migrations. This page's methodology section explains what the entry looks like.

### How many digital nomad applications does Brazil deny?

Published denial despachos matching Resolucao Normativa 45/2021 are rare in the DOU: 0 in the entire tracked period. In practice, weak applications are usually returned with document exigencies (requests for corrections) inside MigranteWeb rather than formally denied, so the published denial count understates real-world rejection risk.

### How old is the typical approved digital nomad?

The median age at approval is 36, computed from the date of birth printed in each published despacho entry (sample of 2,123 initial grants). The largest age group is 25 to 44.

### How often is this tracker updated?

Monthly, after the last Diario Oficial edition of the month is published. Current data covers January 2022 through June 2026 and was last compiled on July 9, 2026. The full dataset is downloadable as CSV on this page.

### Can I reuse this data in an article or report?

Yes. The dataset is published under CC BY 4.0: cite GetBrazilVisa and link to this page. Journalists can also request the media kit, which includes the full monthly series, the nationality breakdown, and methodology notes.

Her rates were extremely reasonable, and the level of care, responsiveness, and professionalism she provided was exceptional.\n\nI initially hired her to help me obtain a Digital Nomad Visa, but during the process I decided to switch to a Family Visa and apply for residency instead. Even though the scope of the work changed, she remained just as attentive and supportive throughout. In fact, I felt compelled to pay her more than our original agreement because I was so impressed with the value she provided.\n\nCamila kept my applications organized, ensured everything was filed on time, secured and prepared me for my appointments with the Federal Police, and made sure I had every document I could possibly need. Thanks to her, I successfully obtained both my visitor visa extension and my resident visa.\n\nShe even went above and beyond by covering my appointment fees when I couldn’t pay with PIX as a foreigner.\n\nThis was honestly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with a lawyer. Camila genuinely cares about her clients and stands with you every step of the way. The strongest month on record is May 2022 with 328 new grants."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How many digital nomads has Brazil approved in total?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Between January 2022 and June 2026, the Diario Oficial da Uniao published 2,161 initial digital nomad residence authorizations and 1,097 renewals under Resolucao Normativa 45/2021, a combined 3,258 published decisions. This covers in-country (MigranteWeb) applications only."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Do these numbers include visas issued at Brazilian consulates?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"No. Consular VITEM XIV visa issuances are consular acts and are never published in the Diario Oficial da Uniao. This tracker counts residence authorizations decided by the Ministry of Justice through MigranteWeb, the in-country route. Total digital nomad volume including consular visas is therefore higher than these figures."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Which nationality gets the most Brazil digital nomad visas?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"United States leads with 804 published decisions (452 initial grants and 352 renewals) since January 2022. Each DOU despacho lists the applicant's country, which is how this breakdown is compiled."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"Is the claim that Brazil has 3,800 registered digital nomads accurate?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"No official source publishes that figure. The official OBMigra counts were 171 registered digital nomads in 2022 and 444 in 2023, and this tracker's primary-source DOU count shows the real scale of in-country approvals since then. Treat any statistic that does not cite the DOU, SISMIGRA, or OBMigra with caution."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"What is a DOU despacho?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"A despacho is a published administrative decision. For digital nomad applications filed through MigranteWeb, the General Coordination of Labor Immigration (CGIL) at the Ministry of Justice publishes batch despachos in Section 1 of the Diario Oficial da Uniao listing each approved applicant's process number, name, passport, and country."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"When does the 30-day Federal Police registration deadline start?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"The 30-day window to register with the Federal Police and obtain your CRNM card starts on the date your approval is published in the Diario Oficial da Uniao, not on the date you receive an email or check MigranteWeb. Applicants who miss this distinction can lose their registration window."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How do I find my own name in the Diario Oficial?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Go to in.gov.br, open the search (Consulta DOU), enter your full name in quotation marks, and restrict the search to Secao 1. Approvals appear under the Ministry of Justice's Department of Migrations. This page's methodology section explains what the entry looks like."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How many digital nomad applications does Brazil deny?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"Published denial despachos matching Resolucao Normativa 45/2021 are rare in the DOU: 0 in the entire tracked period. In practice, weak applications are usually returned with document exigencies (requests for corrections) inside MigranteWeb rather than formally denied, so the published denial count understates real-world rejection risk."}},{"@type":"Question","name":"How old is the typical approved digital nomad?","acceptedAnswer":{"@type":"Answer","text":"The median age at approval is 36, computed from the date of birth printed in each published despacho entry (sample of 2,123 initial grants).
