# How to Renew Your Brazil Digital Nomad Visa (VITEM XIV)

2026 Guide: Extend your stay for a second year. Complete renewal process, documents, costs, and what comes next.

Brazil's Digital Nomad Visa (VITEM XIV) is initially valid for one year and can be renewed for one additional year, giving you a maximum of two consecutive years of legal residence. The renewal process is handled entirely through the MigranteWeb system from inside Brazil. You do not need to leave the country or visit a consulate. Start the process 60-90 days before expiration. Total renewal cost: $150-$500 excluding health insurance.

## When to Start Your Renewal

You must submit your renewal application through MigranteWeb before your current visa expires. Best practice is to begin the process 60 to 90 days before your expiration date.

Official Rule

If you file your renewal at least 30 days before your visa expires, your legal status is automatically extended while the application is under review. This means you will not be in violation of immigration law even if processing takes longer than expected.

Critical deadline: 30 days before expiration

Filing later than 30 days before expiration creates legal risk. While Brazil's Migration Law (Lei 13.445/2017) generally protects applicants who have a pending case, you should avoid cutting it close.

Practical Interpretation

Set calendar reminders at 90, 60, and 45 days before your visa expiration. Treat the 90-day mark as your "start gathering documents" date and the 60-day mark as your target submission date.

## Renewal Requirements

The renewal requirements mirror your original application with a few additions. You must demonstrate that you continue to meet all the eligibility criteria.

- Updated criminal background check from your country of citizenship or from Brazil, issued within 90 days, apostilled and translated
- Updated proof of income showing continued $1,500 USD/month from foreign sources, or $18,000+ in savings (3-6 months of recent statements)
- Valid health insurance covering your second year with $30,000 USD minimum coverage
- Your current CRNM card (must have completed Federal Police registration)
- Copy of your valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond renewed stay
- GRU payment receipt for R$168.13 (code 14055-4, UG 200143)

New requirement for renewal: Brazilian criminal record

You will need a criminal record certificate from Brazil itself (certidão de antecedentes criminais), issued by the competent judicial authority in the state where you have been living. This is in addition to the criminal background check from your country of origin. It can be obtained online from some state courts or in person at the local courthouse (fórum).

## Step-by-Step Renewal Process

1. 1

    ### Verify your CRNM registration

Before anything else, confirm that you completed your Federal Police registration within 90 days of your original visa approval and that you have a valid CRNM card. If you never registered (a surprisingly common oversight) you must complete this step before you can file for renewal.

2. 2

    ### Gather updated documents (start at 90 days before expiration)

Request a new criminal background check from your home country. Obtain a Brazilian criminal record certificate. Compile 3-6 months of recent bank statements and updated client contracts. Renew or extend your health insurance policy.

3. 3

    ### Generate and pay the GRU fee (at 60 days before expiration)

Access the Tesouro Nacional portal and generate a GRU payment slip using code 14055-4 and UG 200143. Pay the R$168.13 fee via bank transfer or boleto bancário.

4. 4

    ### Submit renewal through MigranteWeb (target 60 days before expiration)

Log into your existing MigranteWeb account. Navigate to the renewal section for your existing process. Upload all required documents in PDF format (under 5MB each, clearly legible).

5. 5

    ### Track your application and wait for approval

Renewal processing typically takes 15-30 business days. Track status through MigranteWeb. Common statuses: 'Em Trâmite' (in progress), 'Em Análise' (under review), 'Deferido' (approved). Respond promptly to any 'Pedido de Documentos' requests.

6. 6

    ### Update your CRNM after approval

Once approved and published in the Diário Oficial da União (DOU), schedule an appointment with the Federal Police to update your CRNM card with the new validity dates.

## Renewal Costs

Total estimated renewal cost: **$150 to $500** excluding health insurance premiums. Compare this to your initial application cost of $433–$1,159. The renewal is substantially cheaper.

| Item | Cost | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Government renewal fee (GRU) | R$168.13 (~$33) | Payment code 14055-4, UG 200143 |
| Criminal background check (home country) | $18–$150 (varies) | Depends on nationality and processing method |
| Brazilian criminal record | Free–R$50 (varies) | Depends on state (certidão de antecedentes criminais) |
| Apostille services | $5–$50/doc (varies) | Per document |
| Sworn Portuguese translation | $30–$100/doc (varies) | Per document |
| Health insurance renewal (monthly) | $40–$200 (varies) | Depends on provider and coverage level |
| Passport photos | $10–$20 | Updated photos for CRNM |

## Common Renewal Mistakes to Avoid

- Not registering with Federal Police after initial approval

If you never completed your CRNM registration after your initial visa was approved, you cannot renew through MigranteWeb. You must complete registration first, which can take several weeks at busy Federal Police offices.

- Letting your criminal background check expire

The criminal record from your home country must be issued within 90 days of your renewal application. If you ordered one six months ago for your initial application, it is no longer valid.

- Forgetting the Brazilian criminal record

This is a new requirement that did not apply to your initial application. Many digital nomads are unaware they need a criminal record certificate from Brazil in addition to their home country check.

- Waiting too long to file

Filing your renewal in the final week before expiration is risky. Submit at least 30 days before expiration, ideally 60 days.

- Letting health insurance lapse

If your health insurance policy expired during your first year and you did not renew it, you will need to obtain a new policy covering your entire second year before submitting.

## What Happens After Two Years?

The VITEM XIV allows a maximum of two consecutive years. After your second year expires, you cannot renew the digital nomad visa again. However, you have several options:

### Switch to a different visa category

Work visa (VITEM V) if a Brazilian company sponsors you, investor visa (typically R$500,000+ minimum), or family reunification visa if married to a Brazilian citizen or have a Brazilian-born child.

### Leave and reapply

The regulation does not explicitly state a mandatory waiting period. Some practitioners recommend waiting at least six months before reapplying. Consult an immigration lawyer.

### Apply for permanent residency

After accumulating four years of continuous legal residence in Brazil through various visa categories, you may be eligible for permanent residency. Time spent on the digital nomad visa counts toward this total.
