# Health Insurance for Brazil's Digital Nomad Visa

Complete 2026 Guide: what's required, what's recommended, and how to choose the right plan for your stay in Brazil.

Health insurance with a minimum of $30,000 USD in medical emergency coverage is mandatory for VITEM XIV consulate applications and strongly recommended for MigranteWeb applications. Popular options include SafetyWing ($45/month), Genki ($40/month), Allianz Care ($120+/month), and Brazilian private plans like Amil (R$300+/month). Brazil also has free public healthcare (SUS) available to all residents, but most digital nomads maintain private insurance for quality and convenience.

## Is Health Insurance Required for the VITEM XIV?

The answer depends on how and where you apply. Brazil's VITEM XIV has two application routes, and the health insurance requirement differs between them.

Official Rule

**Consulate applications (from outside Brazil):** Health insurance is mandatory. You must present a certificate showing at least $30,000 USD in medical emergency coverage valid in Brazil for the full duration of your intended stay. Without it, your application will be rejected.

Practical Interpretation

**MigranteWeb applications (from inside Brazil):** Health insurance is not listed as a mandatory document in the MigranteWeb portal's VITEM XIV checklist. However, some immigration analysts at the Ministry of Justice have been known to request it as supplementary documentation. More importantly, you will need health insurance for practical daily life in Brazil: hospital visits, pharmacy purchases, and medical emergencies. We strongly recommend obtaining coverage regardless of application route.

Bottom line: treat health insurance as a required document regardless of your application method. The cost of insurance is minimal compared to the risk of a medical emergency in a foreign country, and having it strengthens your visa application.

## Minimum Coverage Requirements

The minimum coverage threshold is $30,000 USD for medical emergencies. Your insurance certificate must explicitly state this coverage amount and show that the policy is valid in Brazil. Here's what consulates and immigration analysts look for:

- Minimum $30,000 USD in medical emergency coverage (some consulates require €30,000)
- Coverage valid in Brazil (not just your home country)
- Policy dates covering your entire intended stay period
- Emergency medical evacuation coverage (strongly recommended)
- Repatriation coverage in case of death (required by some consulates)
- COVID-19 coverage (no longer universally required but recommended)

Certificate Format Matters

Your insurance certificate must be in English or Portuguese. Certificates in other languages require certified Portuguese translation. The certificate should be a formal letter from your insurance provider, not just a payment receipt or policy number. It must clearly state the coverage amount, validity dates, and geographic coverage area including Brazil.

## Health Insurance Provider Comparison

Based on our experience with 50+ digital nomad visa applications, here are the most popular insurance options ranked by value for VITEM XIV applicants.

## International vs Brazilian Health Insurance

Digital nomads in Brazil typically choose between international nomad insurance (SafetyWing, Allianz) and Brazilian private health plans (Amil, SulAmérica). The right choice depends on your length of stay and lifestyle.

| Factor | International Insurance | Brazilian Private Plans |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Best for | First 6 months, frequent travelers | Stays of 6+ months, settling down |
| Coverage area | Global (185+ countries) | Brazil only |
| Hospital access | Emergency + referral network | Direct access to private hospitals |
| Signup requirements | Passport only | CPF + proof of address |
| Language | English support | Portuguese only (most plans) |
| Waiting periods | None (immediate coverage) | 180 days for some procedures |
| Routine care | Limited or not included | Full routine care included |
| Monthly cost | $45–$350 | R$300–$1,200 ($60–$240) |
| Visa application | Accepted globally | May need certificate translation |

Practical Interpretation

**Our recommendation:** Start with international insurance (SafetyWing or Allianz) for your visa application and first months in Brazil. Once you have your CPF and proof of address, consider switching to a Brazilian private plan (Amil or SulAmérica) for better local coverage and lower costs. Many of our clients run both in parallel during the transition: international for the first 3-6 months, then switch to Brazilian once the carência (waiting period) ends.

## Brazil's Public Healthcare (SUS)

Brazil's SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde) is one of the world's largest public healthcare systems. It provides free medical care to everyone in Brazil (citizens, residents, and foreigners alike) regardless of immigration status. As a digital nomad on the VITEM XIV, you are entitled to use SUS.

Official Rule

Under the Brazilian Constitution (Article 196) and Lei 8.080/1990, healthcare is a right guaranteed to all people within Brazilian territory. You do not need Brazilian citizenship, a CRNM card, or even a visa to access SUS emergency services. For routine care, registering at a local UBS (Unidade Básica de Saúde) with your passport or CRNM is recommended.

### What SUS Covers

- Emergency room visits at public hospitals (UPAs and prontos-socorros)
- Primary care at UBS (Unidade Básica de Saúde) clinics: the Brazilian equivalent of a GP
- Specialist consultations (referral required from UBS, long wait times)
- Laboratory tests, X-rays, and diagnostic imaging
- Prescription medications through the Farmácia Popular program (subsidized or free)
- Vaccinations (excellent coverage, recommended for yellow fever if traveling to certain states)
- Mental health services through CAPS (Centro de Atenção Psicossocial)
- Dental care (basic procedures at UBS dental clinics)

### SUS Limitations for Digital Nomads

- Long wait times for specialist appointments (weeks to months)
- Variable quality between cities and states: São Paulo and southern states generally better
- Limited English-speaking staff, especially outside major cities
- Overcrowded emergency rooms, particularly in large cities
- Not accepted for VITEM XIV visa application as proof of health insurance

Practical Interpretation

Many digital nomads use a hybrid approach: SUS for routine vaccinations, basic check-ups, and genuine emergencies, combined with private insurance for specialist care, hospitalization, and convenience. Register at your nearest UBS with your passport or CRNM to receive a SUS card (Cartão SUS). It's free and takes about 15 minutes.

## What to Look for in a Health Insurance Plan

Not all health insurance plans are created equal for visa purposes and practical use in Brazil. Here are the key factors to evaluate when choosing your coverage.

### Coverage Amount

Minimum $30,000 USD for visa. Aim for $100,000+ for real protection. Hospital stays in private Brazilian hospitals can cost $1,000-5,000/day.

### Geographic Coverage

Must explicitly cover Brazil. If you travel regionally (Argentina, Colombia), ensure multi-country coverage. Some plans exclude certain countries.

### Policy Duration

Must cover your full intended stay. Annual plans are cheapest per month. Short-term travel insurance (30-90 days) may not satisfy 1-year visa applications.

### Claims Process

Direct billing at hospitals is ideal: you show your insurance card and the provider bills directly. Reimbursement models require you to pay upfront and file claims later.

## Health Insurance Cost Breakdown

| Provider / Plan | Monthly Cost | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| SafetyWing Nomad Insurance | $45–$73/mo (varies) | Age-dependent, covers emergency medical + travel |
| Genki (Explorer / Native) | from $40/mo (varies) | Monthly nomad cover, worldwide incl. Brazil; two tiers |
| World Nomads Standard | $65–$120/mo (varies) | Includes adventure sports, 6-month max policies |
| Allianz Care Silver | $120–$200/mo (varies) | Comprehensive international, annual plans |
| Allianz Care Gold | $200–$350/mo (varies) | Top-tier international with dental/vision |
| Brazilian Amil (basic) | R$300–$600/mo (varies) | Local plans, excellent hospital network, requires CPF |
| Brazilian SulAmérica (premium) | R$600–$1,200/mo (varies) | Premium network including Albert Einstein, Sírio-Libanês |
| SUS (public healthcare) | Free | Available to all residents, variable quality/wait times |

Annual cost range for a typical digital nomad: **$540–$2,400/year** for international plans, or **R$3,600–$14,400/year (~$720–$2,880)** for Brazilian private plans.

## Common Health Insurance Mistakes

- Buying insurance that doesn't meet the $30,000 minimum

Budget travel insurance with $10,000-20,000 coverage does not meet the VITEM XIV requirement. Verify the exact coverage amount before purchasing. The consulate will reject applications with insufficient coverage.

- Letting insurance lapse during your stay

If your initial policy expires and you don't renew, you'll have gaps in coverage. This is particularly problematic if you need to renew your visa. You must show valid insurance for the renewal period. Set renewal reminders 30 days before expiration.

- Not checking geographic coverage

Some insurance plans have exclusions for certain countries or regions. Verify that Brazil is explicitly listed in your policy's coverage area. 'Worldwide coverage' plans sometimes exclude specific countries.

- Using home country insurance only

Most domestic health insurance plans (NHS, US employer plans) do not provide coverage abroad. Even if they offer limited international emergency coverage, it typically does not meet the $30,000 minimum or may not be accepted by Brazilian consulates.

- Not getting the certificate in the right format

A payment receipt or policy number is not sufficient. You need a formal insurance certificate or letter stating the coverage amount, validity dates, and geographic coverage. Request this specifically from your provider. Most have a 'visa letter' or 'certificate of insurance' option.
