# Brazil Digital Nomad Visa for Freelancers & Self-Employed

The 2026 Guide: No employer needed. Freelancers, independent contractors, and self-employed professionals are fully eligible for VITEM XIV.

Freelancers, independent contractors, and self-employed professionals are fully eligible for Brazil's Digital Nomad Visa (VITEM XIV). You do not need a traditional employer or a single full-time job to qualify. What you do need is clear documentation proving that your income comes from foreign sources and meets the minimum threshold of $1,500 USD per month, or that you hold at least $18,000 USD in savings.

## Can Freelancers Apply for Brazil's Digital Nomad Visa?

Yes. Resolution CNIg 45/2021 (the legal framework behind the VITEM XIV) defines a digital nomad as anyone who performs work remotely using information and communication technologies for a foreign entity. The resolution does not require a formal employment contract.

Official Rule

Article 5 states that applicants must present either an employment contract, a service contract, or "other documents proving the relationship with a foreign employer." This third category is specifically designed for freelancers and self-employed professionals who work with multiple clients rather than a single employer.

In practice, this means that freelance designers, copywriters, software developers, consultants, marketing professionals, accountants, coaches, e-commerce entrepreneurs, content creators, and any other independent professional earning income from outside Brazil can qualify. The key legal requirement is that none of your paying clients or customers are Brazilian entities.

Practical Interpretation

If you are a salaried remote employee with one employer, see our [general VITEM XIV requirements page](/requirements-digital-nomad-visa-brazil) instead. This guide focuses on the specific documentation strategies freelancers need.

## How Freelancers Prove Income for the VITEM XIV Visa

The income proof requirement is where freelancers face the most confusion. Unlike salaried employees who can submit a single employer letter and payslips, freelancers must build a documentation package that collectively demonstrates consistent foreign-source income. Based on our experience processing 50+ applications, here are the accepted documentation strategies ranked by effectiveness.

### Strategy 1: Bank Statements + Client Contracts (Strongest)

Practical Interpretation

Submit three to six months of bank statements showing regular deposits that total at least $1,500 USD per month, paired with active service contracts or agreements with your foreign clients. The bank statements should clearly show the source of incoming payments, ideally with client names or company names visible in the transaction descriptions. Combine this with signed service agreements, statements of work, or retainer contracts that name you as the service provider and the foreign entity as the client.

This combination is the strongest proof because it shows both the contractual relationship and the actual money flowing into your account.

### Strategy 2: Invoices + Payment Platform Records

Practical Interpretation

If you use platforms like PayPal, Wise, Payoneer, or Stripe, download your transaction history showing incoming payments from foreign clients. Pair these with the invoices you sent to those clients. The invoices should include your name, the client's name and country, the service description, the amount, and the date. Platform transaction records are widely accepted because they clearly show cross-border payment flows.

### Strategy 3: Tax Returns + Accountant Letter

Practical Interpretation

For freelancers who have been self-employed for more than a year, submitting your most recent tax return from your home country along with a letter from your accountant or tax advisor confirming your annual income from foreign freelance work can serve as strong supporting evidence. This is particularly useful for US citizens who file Schedule C or Schedule SE, UK citizens with self-assessment tax returns, or any freelancer with formal tax documentation of their independent income.

### Strategy 4: Savings Proof ($18,000 Alternative)

Practical Interpretation

If your freelance income is irregular (for example, you work on large project-based contracts with gaps between engagements) you may find it easier to qualify through the savings route. Provide bank statements from the past six months showing a balance of at least $18,000 USD. This eliminates the need to prove monthly income consistency and is ideal for freelancers between contracts or those transitioning from employment to self-employment.

## Documents Freelancers Need (Complete Checklist)

Every freelancer applying for the VITEM XIV needs these documents. Items marked with an asterisk (\*) are specific to freelancers and differ from what salaried employees submit.

### Identity & Travel

- Valid passport with 6+ months validity beyond intended stayOfficial rule
- Passport-sized photos (3x4 cm, white background)Official rule

## Freelancer vs Employee Applications: Key Differences

The core requirements are identical, but the documentation approach differs significantly.

| Aspect | Employees | Freelancers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Income proof | Single employer letter + 3 months payslips | Multiple contracts + 3-6 months bank statements |
| Work relationship | Employment contract from one company | Service agreements from 1+ foreign clients |
| Supplementary docs | Minimal: employer handles most | Invoices, platform records, tax returns |
| Package size | Compact: fewer documents | Larger: tells a story of independent activity |
| Processing time | 15-30 business days | 15-30 business days (same when well-organized) |

Practical Interpretation

In our experience, freelancer applications do not take longer to process than employee applications when the documentation is well-organized. The Ministry of Justice evaluates the substance of the proof, not whether it comes from one employer or five clients. A clean, well-structured freelancer application with clear income documentation processes in the same 15 to 30 business days as any other application.

## Freelancer Application Costs

| Item | Cost | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| GRU fee (MigranteWeb) | ~R$168 (~$33) | Government processing fee for in-country applications |
| Consulate visa fee (if applying abroad) | $290–$500 (varies) | Varies by nationality and consulate |
| Criminal background check | $18–$150 (varies) | Depends on country (FBI $18, DBS £18, etc.) |
| Apostille services | $5–$50/doc (varies) | Per document, varies by country |
| Certified Portuguese translation | $30–$100/doc (varies) | Sworn translator (tradutor juramentado) |

| Professional visa assistance | $250–$599 (varies) | Optional: GetBrazilVisa packages |

## Common Mistakes Freelancers Make

- Submitting bank statements without matching contracts

Bank deposits alone do not prove the foreign-source requirement. Without contracts or invoices showing who paid you and from which country, the immigration analyst cannot verify that your income qualifies. Always pair financial proof with client documentation.

- Including income from Brazilian clients

If you have any Brazilian clients (even one small project) do not include that income in your application. The VITEM XIV strictly requires all income to come from outside Brazil. If Brazilian client payments appear in your bank statements, provide a separate summary or highlight only the qualifying foreign-source transactions.

- Showing inconsistent monthly totals

If your income varies significantly month to month (for example, $500 one month and $4,000 the next), consider using the $18,000 savings route instead. While the regulation states "$1,500 per month," immigration analysts may question months that fall below the threshold even if the average exceeds it.

- Not translating contracts

While contracts in English are generally accepted for the VITEM XIV application, contracts in other languages (German, French, Japanese, etc.) require certified Portuguese translation by a sworn translator. Budget extra time and cost for this step if your client agreements are not in English or Portuguese.

- Forgetting the self-declaration letter

This is a separate document from your contracts. It is a signed statement in which you personally attest to your ability to perform work remotely. Freelancers sometimes assume their contracts cover this requirement, but it is a distinct document that must be notarized and, for consulate applications, apostilled.
