# Brazil Digital Nomad Visa for Families: Children & Dependents Guide

A 2026 roadmap for relocating to Brazil with kids, spouses, or parents: what the law allows, what it costs, and what documents each dependent needs.

Children, spouses, and parents can accompany a VITEM XIV holder as dependents under Resolução Normativa CNIg nº 45/2021. Each dependent raises the primary applicant's required foreign income by US$60 per month. Children need apostilled birth certificates with sworn Portuguese translations. When only one parent travels with minor children, a notarized travel authorization from the other parent is mandatory, apostilled and translated. All dependents must appear in person at the Polícia Federal for CRNM biometrics within 90 days of DOU publication.

## Who Qualifies as a Dependent

Resolução Normativa CNIg nº 45, de 9 de setembro de 2021, combined with Brazil's Migration Law (Lei nº 13.445/2017), permits the following family members to join the primary VITEM XIV holder as dependents:

- Legal spouse or stable-union partner (with apostilled marriage certificate or declaração de união estável)
- Minor biological or adopted children (under 18)
- Unmarried adult children under 24 enrolled as full-time students
- Children of any age with legally recognized disability causing financial dependence
- Parents who are financially dependent on the primary applicant

Official Rule

Each dependent receives a residence authorization derivative of the primary VITEM XIV holder. If the primary visa terminates (for any reason) each dependent's legal status terminates with it. Dependents can convert to a primary residence authorization later (including permanent residency after two years), but not automatically.

## Income Threshold Per Dependent

The base income requirement is US$1,500 per month in foreign-source income (or US$18,000 in savings held for 3+ months). Each dependent added to the primary application raises the monthly threshold by US$60.

| Family Configuration | Minimum Monthly Income | Savings Alternative |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Single applicant | US$1,500 | US$18,000 |
| Primary + 1 dependent (e.g., spouse) | US$1,560 | US$18,720 |
| Primary + 2 dependents (e.g., spouse + 1 child) | US$1,620 | US$19,440 |
| Primary + 3 dependents (e.g., spouse + 2 children) | US$1,680 | US$20,160 |
| Primary + 4 dependents | US$1,740 | US$20,880 |

Practical Interpretation

The savings alternative is calculated as 12 × the monthly threshold. The rule of thumb: US$18,000 base + US$720 per dependent. Consular officers occasionally round up and many families over-document by 15–20% to leave no doubt.

## Documents Required for Each Child

- Valid passport for the child (6+ months validity beyond intended stay)
- Birth certificate: apostilled in country of issue and sworn-translated to Portuguese
- Passport-sized photo (3x4 cm, white background)
- Health insurance certificate with US$30,000+ coverage (mandatory for consulate route)
- Copy of primary applicant's passport and proof of income (provided by primary)
- Travel authorization from non-travelling parent (if applicable): notarized, apostilled, translated

For country-specific apostille procedures, see our [apostille guide](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-apostille-guide). Children do not need criminal background checks because they are under the minimum age for most national BGC programs.

## Both Parents Travelling Together

When both parents relocate, the simplest approach is for each parent with qualifying foreign income to apply as a primary VITEM XIV holder, with the children added as dependents on **one** of the two primary applications. Duplicating children across both parents' files is unnecessary and can slow processing.

Practical Interpretation

If only one parent has qualifying income, that parent applies as primary with both spouse and children as dependents. The total monthly threshold scales by US$60 per added family member. A non-earning spouse may help with school enrollment, CRNM appointments, and daily family logistics under dependent status.

Couples should read our [couples guide](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-couples) for scenario-by-scenario document lists, then use this page for the child-specific requirements.

## Single-Parent Situations

Brazil is strict about child protection, in line with its ratification of the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. When only one parent travels with a minor, additional documentation is always required.

| Situation | Required Documentation |
| --- | --- |
| Both parents share custody, only one travels | Notarized travel authorization from the non-travelling parent: apostilled and sworn-translated to Portuguese |
| Applicant has sole legal custody | Court order granting sole custody: apostilled and sworn-translated |
| Other parent is deceased | Death certificate of the other parent: apostilled and sworn-translated |
| Adoption cases | Full adoption order: apostilled and sworn-translated; original birth certificate reflecting adoption |

Airlines and Brazilian immigration both check travel authorization

Carry original copies in your hand luggage. Some airlines refuse to board an unaccompanied minor or a single-parent family if the authorization is missing or improperly apostilled. The Federal Police at the port of entry will also ask to see it.

## School Enrollment for Children in Brazil

Under the Ministério da Educação (MEC) guidance, every child legally residing in Brazil has the right to basic education. Dependents on a VITEM XIV exercise this right in full.

- Private schools (bilingual, international, Brazilian) typically accept foreign passport + VITEM XIV or dependent residence authorization directly. Enrollment usually takes days.
- Public schools generally require the CRNM card once issued. Some municipal networks accept the DOU publication as proof during the 90-day transition window.
- Higher education (vestibular, ENEM): foreign transcripts need apostille and sworn translation. Brazilian universities increasingly offer English-language programs at the graduate level.

## Health Insurance for Dependent Children

Health insurance is mandatory for every applicant (including minor dependents) on the consulate route. The MigranteWeb in-country route does not require it, but it is strongly recommended for families. Brazil's public health system (SUS) is free and open to all residents, but quality varies and private supplementary coverage is standard for families.

Review provider options and cost ranges on our [health insurance guide](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-health-insurance). Most international nomad policies (SafetyWing, World Nomads, Allianz Care) offer family add-ons with per-child discounts.

## CRNM Registration for Minor Dependents

Once the visa is approved and published in the *Diário Oficial da União*, the family has 90 days to appear at the Polícia Federal for biometric registration and CRNM card issuance. **Every dependent must appear in person**, including infants.

Official Rule

Bring each child's original passport, apostilled and translated birth certificate, DOU publication, and the CRNM fee receipt (R$204.77 per person). The São Paulo Lapa federal police unit currently has a ~2-month backlog; book immediately after DOU publication. Quieter units in the Northeast (Fortaleza, Recife) often have same-week availability.

Practical Interpretation

Federal Police officers are accustomed to photographing and fingerprinting young children. For infants under 2, full prints may not be taken. A photo and parental signature usually suffice. For children 2+, fingerprints are standard.
