# Brazil Digital Nomad Visa for Couples: Complete 2026 Guide

Married, unmarried, one-income, two-income: exactly how couples apply for the VITEM XIV in 2026.

Couples apply separately for the VITEM XIV. There is no joint application. Each partner needs their own income proof: US$1,500 per month from foreign sources or US$18,000 in savings held for at least three months. A non-earning spouse can be added as a dependent on a qualifying partner's application, which raises the income threshold by US$60 per month. Married and unmarried couples are treated differently: a foreign marriage certificate works for dependents, while unmarried partners need a registered stable-union declaration or must each qualify independently.

## Can Couples Apply for the VITEM XIV Together?

No. Brazil's Digital Nomad Visa has no joint application process. Every applicant files their own VITEM XIV request, whether through a Brazilian consulate abroad or through MigranteWeb inside Brazil. Each partner is evaluated independently against the criteria set out in **Resolução Normativa CNIg nº 45, de 9 de setembro de 2021**.

Official Rule

Article 2 of RN 45/2021 defines the digital nomad as an individual, not a household. The text uses the singular *imigrante* throughout, and Article 4 requires the individual applicant to prove income from foreign sources of at least US$1,500 per month, or savings of at least US$18,000 held for at least three months. There is no provision for combining household income between two primary applicants.

In practice, three couple scenarios exist:

- **Two-income couples**: both partners earn qualifying foreign income and each applies as a primary VITEM XIV holder.
- **One-income couples**: the earning partner applies as the primary holder; the non-earning partner is added as a dependent.
- **Unmarried couples**: dependent status is only available with a recognized stable union; otherwise both must qualify independently.

## Two-Income Couples: Each Partner Applies Independently

When both partners earn at least US$1,500 per month in foreign-source income, the simplest path is for each to file a complete primary VITEM XIV application. Marriage is irrelevant here. Unmarried partners who both qualify can apply exactly like a married couple where both work.

Practical Interpretation

Each partner builds their own full document package: passport, background check from their country of citizenship, apostilled and sworn-translated, plus their own income proof. The files are submitted together but reviewed independently. Processing speed is typically identical to a single applicant, and approval for one partner does not legally depend on approval for the other.

For more on documenting self-employed income, see our [freelancer guide](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-freelancer). For the general document requirements, see the [VITEM XIV requirements checklist](/requirements-digital-nomad-visa-brazil).

## One-Income Couples: Dependent Spouse Path

When only one partner has qualifying foreign income, that partner files as the primary VITEM XIV holder and the other is added as a dependent spouse. The primary applicant must prove US$1,500 per month **plus US$60 per month per dependent**. For a married couple, the primary applicant therefore needs US$1,560 per month in foreign income, or a proportionally higher savings balance.

Official Rule

The dependent pathway is grounded in Article 5 of RN 45/2021 read together with Brazil's Migration Law (Lei nº 13.445/2017), which recognizes family reunification for temporary residents. The dependent spouse receives a derivative residence authorization tied to the primary holder's visa. If the primary visa ends, the dependent's status ends with it.

The dependent spouse must still submit identity documents, a criminal background check from their country of citizenship, and, for the consulate route, proof of health insurance. The key difference is that the dependent does not need to show personal income.

Dependent spouses cannot work for Brazilian employers

A dependent on a VITEM XIV can continue their foreign-source remote work, but cannot accept employment from a Brazilian company, sign service contracts with Brazilian clients, or launch a registered Brazilian business in their own name. Doing so risks losing the dependent status and may affect future permanent-residency applications.

## Unmarried Couples: Stable Union or Independent Applications

Brazilian immigration recognizes the *união estável* (stable union) as equivalent to marriage for most residency purposes, but only when formally documented. An unmarried partner cannot simply be listed as a dependent. Without documentation, the relationship is invisible to the Ministry of Justice.

Unmarried couples have two viable paths:

1. **Each partner applies independently.** This requires both to meet the US$1,500/month (or US$18,000 savings) threshold. No marriage or union document is needed because no dependent relationship is being claimed.
2. **Register a stable union and file as primary + dependent.** Couples can execute a *declaração de união estável* before a notary in their home country (or at a Brazilian consulate), have it apostilled, and sworn-translate it into Portuguese. It then functions equivalently to a marriage certificate for the dependent visa.

Practical Interpretation

The stable-union declaration typically requires both partners to appear before a notary, state the start date of cohabitation, and confirm the relationship is public, continuous, and intended to form a family. Same-sex stable unions are fully recognized in Brazil since the 2011 STF ruling and have been accepted for VITEM XIV dependents without issue.

## Documents by Couple Scenario

| Document | Married, Two Incomes | Married, One Income | Unmarried |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Passport (each partner) | Required | Required | Required |
| Income proof (each partner) | Each shows $1,500/month | Primary shows $1,560/month | Each shows $1,500/month |
| Background check (each partner) | Required, apostilled + translated | Required, apostilled + translated | Required, apostilled + translated |
| Marriage certificate | Optional | Required, apostilled + translated | N/A |
| Stable-union declaration | N/A | Alternative to marriage cert | Required if applying as dependent |
| Health insurance (consulate route) | Each partner | Primary + dependent both | Each partner |
| Self-declaration letter | Each partner | Primary only | Each partner |

Every foreign document must be apostilled in its country of issue and sworn-translated to Portuguese. See our [apostille guide](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-apostille-guide) for country-by-country procedures.

## Timing, CRNM Registration, and Joint Travel

Couples should submit their applications on the same day whenever possible. Parallel submission keeps both partners' 90-day CRNM registration windows synchronized after the DOU publication and lets you book a single Polícia Federal appointment for biometrics.

Practical Interpretation

At the federal police appointment, both partners should bring the full primary + dependent document sets (or both primary sets, if each applied independently). The São Paulo Lapa unit currently has an approximately two-month backlog for CRNM appointments. Book the moment your DOU publication comes through. See our [CRNM and federal police guide](/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-rnm-federal-police) for the current wait times.

## Key Takeaways

- There is no joint VITEM XIV application. Every partner files individually.
- Combined household income does not count; each primary applicant must meet $1,500/month or $18,000 savings independently.
- One-income couples use the dependent path: primary shows $1,560/month ($1,500 + $60 per dependent).
- Unmarried couples need a notarized, apostilled, and sworn-translated declaração de união estável to use the dependent path.
- Dependent spouses may work remotely for foreign clients but cannot take Brazilian employment.
- Submit applications the same day to synchronize the CRNM registration window.
