# CPF for Digital Nomads in Brazil: Complete 2026 Guide

The single most useful number you will collect in Brazil, and how to get it in every way possible, before or after you arrive.

The CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) is Brazil's national taxpayer ID, required for opening a bank account, buying a SIM card, signing housing contracts, accessing the public health system, and almost every other adult transaction. Digital nomads can obtain a CPF at a Brazilian consulate abroad before travel, at a Receita Federal office or partner bank (Banco do Brasil, Caixa) after arrival, or automatically as part of the CRNM card once the VITEM XIV is approved. The CPF is free (or ~US$15–30 at a consulate), permanent, and never expires.

## What is a CPF and Why Every Digital Nomad Needs One

The Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas is the Brazilian equivalent of the US Social Security Number, the UK National Insurance number, and the Canadian SIN, rolled into one and extended to every major consumer transaction. Issued by the Receita Federal do Brasil, the CPF is an 11-digit number (format: 000.000.000-00) that identifies you to the tax authority, banks, employers, landlords, telecom providers, and government services.

Official Rule

The CPF was created by Decreto-Lei nº 401/1968 and is regulated today by the Receita Federal under Instrução Normativa RFB nº 1.548/2015 (updated). Foreign residents are explicitly eligible. The rules do not require Brazilian nationality, and non-residents can obtain a CPF for specific purposes (property purchase, investment, court proceedings) without ever entering Brazil.

### Transactions that require a CPF

- Opening any Brazilian bank account (traditional or neobank)
- Buying a Brazilian SIM card or mobile phone plan
- Signing a residential rental or purchase contract
- Registering on SUS (Brazil's public health system) or private health insurance
- Signing up for utilities (electricity, water, internet)
- Receiving a delivery from major e-commerce platforms (Mercado Livre, Amazon.com.br)
- Booking domestic flights on some Brazilian carriers
- Getting a Brazilian driver's licence
- Enrolling children in school (public or private)

## Getting a CPF Before Arrival (At a Brazilian Consulate)

Most Brazilian consulates abroad process CPF applications for foreign nationals. Fees typically range from US$15 to US$30, paid in local currency by money order or bank draft. Processing ranges from same-day to 20 business days depending on the post.

### What the consulate requires

- Valid passport with at least one photocopy of the data page
- Proof of residence in your home country (utility bill, bank statement, usually within 90 days)
- Completed CPF application form (many consulates offer it online)
- Payment of the consular fee (varies US$15–30)
- For minors: parent/guardian passport + birth certificate (apostilled if foreign)

Practical Interpretation

Getting your CPF at the consulate during the same visit you apply for the VITEM XIV is efficient. You leave with both identifiers in motion. The CPF itself is issued as a paper certificate; you will later use the number (not the card) for every transaction. A physical CPF card is optional and is mostly used for visual confirmation.

## Getting a CPF After Arrival (Inside Brazil)

The fastest path for nomads who land on the 90-day tourist stamp or eVisa is to walk into a Receita Federal office or a partner bank branch on arrival. Two principal options:

| Channel | Cost | Typical Time | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Receita Federal office | Free | Same day | Bring passport + tourist stamp + Brazilian address proof |
| Banco do Brasil branch | R$7 fee | Same day | Partner channel; works without an account with the bank |
| Caixa Econômica Federal branch | R$7 fee | Same day | Partner channel; similar to Banco do Brasil |
| Correios (post office) | R$7 fee | Same day | Widely available; convenient in smaller cities |

Practical Interpretation

Brazilian address proof can be a rental contract, a utility bill addressed to you at your accommodation, or a declaração signed by your host. Airbnb confirmation letters are sometimes accepted, sometimes not. Bring alternatives. In smaller cities, Correios often has the shortest line.

## CPF Via CRNM: The Automatic Path After VITEM XIV Approval

Once your VITEM XIV is approved and published in the DOU, you register with the Polícia Federal for your CRNM card. The CRNM application process allocates a CPF to every holder who does not already have one. The CPF number is printed on the front of the CRNM card when you receive it.

Official Rule

Under the Polícia Federal–Receita Federal integration in place since 2018, a CPF is generated automatically during CRNM registration. No separate visit or form is required. If you already have a CPF (from a consulate or prior Receita Federal visit), the system links your existing number to the new CRNM.

Practical Interpretation

If you plan to open a Brazilian bank account or rent an apartment immediately after arrival, do not wait for the CRNM. Get a CPF at a Receita Federal office or partner bank on your first week. Bank account approval (especially at neobanks) can take days; starting early keeps your timeline clean.

## Online CPF Registration

The Receita Federal provides an online CPF registration portal at [gov.br/receitafederal](https://www.gov.br/receitafederal). Eligibility varies by nationality and country of residence:

- Residents of countries with active Receita Federal online channels can often register from home
- The system requires a valid email, passport data, mother's full name, and country of birth
- After submission, a temporary CPF is typically issued; physical verification may be required within 30 days
- Online CPF is typically free

Beware of third-party CPF services

Many private websites charge US$30 to US$100 for CPF registration that is free through official channels. The only authoritative sites are Receita Federal (gov.br/receitafederal) and official Brazilian diplomatic missions. Do not share your passport data with unverified third parties.

## CPF vs CNPJ: Which One Do You Need?

| Aspect | CPF | CNPJ |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Holder | Individual person (Pessoa Física) | Company or legal entity (Pessoa Jurídica) |
| Format | 11 digits (000.000.000-00) | 14 digits (00.000.000/0000-00) |
| When needed | Universal: every personal transaction | To run a registered Brazilian business, issue nota fiscal invoices, or hold certain business contracts |
| VITEM XIV holders | Mandatory | Restricted: foreign-source income rule limits CNPJ use while on temporary visa |
| Permanent residency holders | Mandatory | Fully available |

Practical Interpretation

VITEM XIV holders generally should not open a CNPJ while on temporary status because registering a Brazilian business conflicts with the foreign-source income requirement. Once you convert to permanent residency (RN 31), the CNPJ path opens for those who want to formalize a Brazilian business. See our [permanent residency guide](/brazil-permanent-residency-path).

## Common Mistakes

- Delaying CPF until after you arrive

Waiting to obtain a CPF in Brazil works fine for most nomads, but landlords, banks, and SIM providers won't process anything until the number is in hand. Book a Receita Federal or Correios slot in your first 48 hours.

- Paying third-party services

The CPF is free or nearly free through official channels. Private intermediaries charging US$30+ are operating a pure convenience markup. There is no priority channel they can unlock.

- Using the wrong address proof

Hotel reservations and short-stay rental confirmations are frequently rejected. Bring a signed host declaration or an Airbnb message confirming a monthly rental, paired with ID of the host if possible.

- Getting duplicates

A person is allocated one CPF for life. Obtaining a CPF at a consulate and then again at Receita Federal creates a duplicate that must be merged; the system does this, but it delays bank onboarding. Record and reuse the first number issued.
