## When Is Brazil Carnival 2027?

Carnival moves every year because it is tied to Easter. For 2027, the confirmed schedule for Rio de Janeiro is:

| Date | Event |
| --- | --- |
| Friday to Saturday, Feb 5 to 6, 2027 | Serie Ouro (Access Group) parades |
| Sunday to Tuesday, Feb 7 to 9, 2027 | Grupo Especial, the top 12 samba schools at the Sambadrome |
| Tuesday, Feb 9, 2027 | Carnival Tuesday, the peak of street celebrations |
| Wednesday, Feb 10, 2027 | Ash Wednesday, official end of Carnival |
| Saturday, Feb 13, 2027 | Champions Parade, the top schools perform again |

Street blocos across Rio, Salvador, Olinda, and other cities generally run for the full week surrounding these dates, not just the Sambadrome nights.

Latest dataJune 2026: **49 digital nomad visa approvals** published in Brazil's official gazette. [See the live tracker →](https://getbrazilvisa.com/brazil-digital-nomad-visa-statistics)

## Do Americans Need a Visa for Carnival 2027?

**Yes.** Since April 10, 2025, US citizens need a Brazilian eVisa before entering the country. This reverses the old visa free arrangement, and a surprising amount of travel content online has not caught up with the change yet.

- **Cost:** US$80.90 per applicant
- **Validity:** 10 years, multiple entries
- **Stay length:** Up to 90 days per visit, extendable to 180 days total
- **Where to apply:** The official VFSeVisa portal, not a third party reseller site
- **Timing:** Apply at least two months before you travel. Airlines can be fined for boarding passengers without a valid eVisa, so do not plan to sort this out at check in

Canadian and Australian citizens face the same new eVisa requirement. Citizens of the EU, UK, and most Latin American countries do not need a visa for short tourist stays.

## Rio, Salvador, or Olinda: Which Carnival Should You Pick?

These are genuinely different experiences, not just three cities doing the same thing.

### Rio de Janeiro

Samba, the Sambadrome parade, mostly a spectator experience. The most famous and most expensive option, with street blocos happening across the city alongside the official parades.

**Cost:** $360 to $1,600+/night in Zona Sul during Carnival week

### Salvador

Axe music, trio eletrico trucks, and a full week of celebration. Far more participatory than Rio, you are part of the crowd, not watching from the stands. Holds a Guinness World Record for the largest street party on Earth.

**Cost:** Abada party passes range roughly $50 to $600+

### Olinda & Recife

Frevo music, giant bonecos (puppets), and over 500 free street blocos. The most local and least commercialized option, popular with Brazilians from other states looking for an authentic Carnival.

**Cost:** No ticket, no abada, effectively free to attend

First time visitors chasing the classic postcard image usually pick Rio. Those who want to dance in the crowd rather than watch from a grandstand, and spend less doing it, usually prefer Salvador or Olinda.

## What Carnival 2027 Will Actually Cost

Carnival is Brazil's single biggest demand spike of the year, and pricing reacts accordingly. During Carnival 2026, Rio hotel rates rose roughly 49% year over year, and Airbnb demand jumped about 50%, with many hosts charging two to three times their normal nightly rate near the main celebration areas.

| Expense | Typical Carnival Week Cost |
| --- | --- |
| Rio lodging, Copacabana/Ipanema/Leblon | $360 to $1,600+/night |
| Salvador abada (party pass) | $50 to $600+ per event |
| Olinda/Recife street blocos | Free |
| Sambadrome grandstand tickets | Varies widely by sector and night, book early |

## Staying Safe During Carnival

The US State Department keeps Brazil at a Level 2 advisory, exercise increased caution. During Carnival specifically, the most common issue by far is opportunistic theft in crowds, not violent crime.

Practical Safety Tips

- Pickpocketing and phone snatching are the most common Carnival specific risks, especially at transit stations, beaches, and busy streets
- Do not display expensive watches, jewelry, or your phone openly in crowds
- Skip municipal buses during Carnival, use rideshare or the metro instead
- Stay with a group at night and agree on a meeting point in case you get separated in a crowd

Some regions are trending in the right direction, Bahia state reported a 15% drop in tourist targeted crime during Carnival 2026 compared with the year before.

## Plan Your Trip: A Practical Toolkit for Americans

A few real, useful links to actually book the trip, not just read about it. These are the same categories of service Camila's clients use whether they are visiting for Carnival or relocating long term.

### Flights

Compare fares and set price alerts before Carnival demand pushes prices up.

[Google Flights](https://www.google.com/travel/flights) [Skyscanner](https://www.skyscanner.com)

### Where to Stay

Book early. Rio listings near the Sambadrome and Zona Sul sell out and reprice fastest.

### Travel & Health Insurance

A short term policy for the trip itself. Planning to apply for the Digital Nomad Visa later has its own separate insurance requirement, covered in our guide.

### Staying Connected

An eSIM you can activate before you land is the simplest way to have data from the airport onward.

### Getting Around

Rideshare is the practical choice during Carnival, avoid municipal buses in crowded periods.

## Remote Worker? You Could Stay Much Longer Than 90 Days

Your eVisa only covers a tourist stay of up to 90 days (extendable to 180). If you work remotely for clients or an employer outside Brazil, there is a separate visa built for exactly that: the Digital Nomad Visa (VITEM XIV). It is a different application from your tourist eVisa, applied for on its own timeline, not something you convert into after landing for Carnival.

VITEM XIV at a glance

- **Who qualifies:** remote employees, freelancers, or business owners whose income comes from outside Brazil
- **Income requirement:** $1,500 USD/month for the last 3 months, or $18,000 USD in savings
- **Duration:** 1 year, renewable once for a second year, 2 years total
- **Restriction:** you cannot work for or be paid by Brazilian companies on this visa
- **Core documents:** valid passport, proof of income, an apostilled criminal background check, and health insurance if applying at a consulate abroad

- For the full requirements, application steps, and costs, see our complete [Digital Nomad Visa (VITEM XIV) guide](https://getbrazilvisa.com/brazil-digital-nomad-visa)
- Timing matters. Rio rental prices and short term listing rates spike hard around Carnival, so if you are apartment hunting for a longer stay, signing a lease before or well after Carnival week is usually cheaper
- If you already have a Digital Nomad Visa application in progress, plan around Carnival, not during it. Federal Police offices, like all Brazilian government agencies, close for the Carnival holiday period, so registration appointments and document pickups will need to happen before or after
